Commonwealth funding bolstering local community facilities

The Federal Labor Member for Fremantle, Melissa Parke, today welcomed the delivery of $368,000 that will fund five community infrastructure projects in the cities of Fremantle, Melville, and Cockburn, and the Town of East Fremantle.

"These federal-local partnership projects are delivering long-term community benefits and supporting local jobs," said Ms Parke.

$500,000 Primary Care Infrastructure Grant to boost collaborative care at East Fremantle Medical Centre

Patients can expect to see big changes at East Fremantle Medical Centre, thanks to the centre's success in receiving one of the Gillard Government's Primary Care Infrastructure Grants.

"This is great news for residents of East Fremantle and neighbouring suburbs, as it will mean patients will soon be able to access a wider range of services at East Fremantle Medical Centre," said Melissa Parke, Federal Labor Member for Fremantle.

Senate Community Affairs Committee releases report on gene patents

Parliament House, Canberra

The Senate Community Affairs References Committee today released its much‐anticipated report on gene patents and their impacts on health services, medical research and human health.

The report 'strongly rejects' the current approach of IP Australia, which allows the patenting of 'isolated genetic materials' on the basis that they are 'inventions' rather than non‐patentable products of nature or 'mere discoveries'.

Government supports Perth International Regatta

Minister for Sport Mark Arbib and Member for Fremantle Melissa Parke today welcomed the start of the Perth International Regatta, one of the biggest dinghy sailing regattas to be held in Western Australia.

The regatta is partly funded through the Australian Government's $8.6 million commitment to the 2011 International Sailing Federation (ISAF) World Championship, to be held in Perth in December 2011.

Freo pensions to increase on 20 September

From today around 18,000 pensioners in the federal Fremantle electorate will receive an increase in their pensions due to the Labor government's improved and sustainable indexation reforms.

The Member for Fremantle, Melissa Parke, said pension payments would increase by $15.00 per fortnight for singles on the maximum rate, and $22.60 per fortnight for couples combined on the maximum rate.
