$50 million for major projects at 29 Fremantle area primary schools
Thursday, 27 August 2009

Federal Member for Fremantle, Melissa Parke today announced that 29 primary schools in the Fremantle electorate will receive more than $50 million for major new infrastructure projects under the third and final round of Primary Schools for the 21st Century (P21).

"This investment in our primary schools is long overdue and will go a long way to supporting local jobs during the global recession," Ms Parke said. "It's been great to see principals, school communities and the building industry in the Fremantle electorate working together with the State and Federal governments to deliver these important projects." Since May, the Fremantle electorate has received more than $90.76 million under the Building the Education Revolution suite of programs:

  • $81,864,766 for the construction of state-of-the-art libraries, multipurpose halls, assembly halls, new classrooms and resource centres at 49 primary schools under the P21 program.
  • $7.155 million for minor refurbishment, maintenance and infrastructure projects in 54 primary and secondary schools under the National School Pride program.
  • $1.75 million for 4 new science laboratories at Hamilton Senior High School under the Science and Language Centres for 21st Century Secondary Schools program.

Ms Parke said that the Rudd Government is undertaking the largest school modernisation program in Australia's history to support local jobs during the global recession and to ensure that Australia's schools are equipped to provide a first class education.

"Teachers and students in our schools should be teaching and learning in 21st Century facilities,"said Ms Parke.
